Traveling Information

Getting there

Finland is easily accessible from all over the world. Many international airlines have regular flights to Helsinki. There are some connecting flights also to Jyväskylä (airport code JYV). It is also possible to travel from Helsinki by train, or bus. The flights from Helsinki to Jyväskylä are operated by FlyBe and trip takes about 50 minutes. The most important flights for participants are:

Sat 8.9 6:50-7:40 BE5638
Sun 9.9 19:40-20:25 BE5644

Those who arrive at Jyväskylä airport are strongly encouraged to contact taxi dispatch service at +358-100-6900 prior to their arrival to ensure immediate transportation from the airport to the hotel. This is especially important for those arriving at night. We recommend making the phone call when transiting in Helsinki. The taxi ride from the airport to the hotels takes about 20 minutes.

The train and bus journeys from Helsinki airport take about 3 hours. There are over 10 of each travelling every day. Some buses go through the Helsinki airport and drive directly to Jyväskylä. For some, one needs to first travel to Helsinki city center with local buses. For boarding the train one can travel first to Tikkurila train station with a local bus number 61 or by taxi. Trains and buses arrive right in Jyväskylä city centre at the public transport interchange. For more information about the trains see VR Railways and for buses see Matkahuolto.

Local information

The symposium is organized in one of the university campus areas located by the lake Jyväsjärvi in the Agora building (street address Mattilanniemi 2), which is situated within a walking distance of the city center. The hotel Alba is located next to the Agora building. See the attached map or google maps for more information.

Weather in Jyväskylä

In September, the weather may vary from clear and sunny to crisp and rainy and the changing colours of nature bring about richness in atmosphere. The average daytime temperature is around +10 C. See Finnish Meteorological Institute for more information.

Visa information

Finland is part of the Schengen area. The necessary travel documents are defined by the Schengen Agreement and they depend on the citizenship of the traveller. Please check your home country on the list of The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. As a general rule, foreign nationals who require an entry visa are requested to apply for one from the diplomatic mission that represents Finland in their home country at least two weeks before planned traveling date (at least one month recommended). The visa application should include an invitation letter, which can be obtained after the payment of the registration fee is confirmed. Please contact the event coordinator at registration.NIBS2012@jyvaskylabooking.fi for issuing the invitation letter. Read more about applying a visa on The Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland web pages.
